In everyday use, the lift column is often confused with the lift axis and the manipulator, yet it solves a task all of its own. This article explains what a lift column is, where its limits lie and how it differs from the lift axis and the manipulator. This way you choose the right system and avoid wrong investments.
A brief classification up front: a lift column adjusts the height, the lift axis raises heavy loads sway-free on the vertical axis, and the manipulator handles the component freely in space. The difference between lift column, lift axis and manipulator therefore mainly comes down to task, weight and type of movement.

What is a lift column?
A lift column is a telescoping linear drive that raises a load purely vertically, usually over comparatively short travels. It is the right choice when only a height needs to be changed, such as the working height of a table. It does not provide sway-free load guidance in space or any turning and tilting of the load.
Where a lift column is used
Typical applications of a lift column are height-adjustable workbenches, assembly and packing stations, machine frames or camera systems. Wherever a single level needs to be adjusted cleanly and repeatably in height, the lift column is the simple, compact solution.
The lift column reaches its limit as soon as the load becomes heavy or has to be moved, guided or joined in space. That is where the lift axis or the manipulator come into play.
Lift axis: sway-free heavy loads on the Z-axis
The lift axis is a linear load guide that raises heavy loads purely vertically and sway-free, with the ZH90 lift axis up to 1,200 kg. Unlike the simple lift column, it is designed for industrial continuous operation, high load capacity and process reliability, and it can be integrated into complex systems, for example with synchronized axes.
The lift axis plays to its strengths wherever heavy components are moved precisely and without impact on the vertical axis, without the load being allowed to sway sideways. When a lift axis and when a manipulator is the right Z-axis solution is explored in the article Lift axis or manipulator.
Distinction from the manipulator
A manipulator does not just lift, it positions, turns, tilts and joins the component with millimeter precision, including off-center loads. This covers tasks a lift column cannot perform. A detailed definition is provided in the guide: What is a manipulator.
At Zeilhofer the range extends from the articulated manipulator for movements in space to the cable manipulator for light, fast loads. The deeper distinction between lift axis and manipulator is covered in the article Lift axis or manipulator.
Direct comparison: which solution when?
Pure height adjustment over short travel, low to medium load: lift column.
Heavy load purely vertical, sway-free, industrial continuous operation: lift axis.
Move, turn, join, position the load in space: manipulator.
In practice the systems are often combined: a lift axis for vertical lifting, a manipulator for positioning, complemented by the right gripper. Such multi-axis systems combine the strengths of several systems in one solution. A complete overview of all lifting aids is given in the guide to lifting aids.
What matters when choosing
Three questions usually lead to the right solution: how heavy is the load? Does it only need to be lifted or also guided in space? And how often does the task repeat? Clarifying these points early avoids over- or under-dimensioning. Which mistakes frequently happen here is shown in the article 3 mistakes when selecting handling technology.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a lift column and a lift axis?
A lift column adjusts the height over short travel, usually for lighter loads. A lift axis is designed for heavy loads up to 1,200 kg, sway-free lifting and industrial continuous operation.
Do I need a lift axis or a manipulator?
If the load only needs to be lifted vertically, the lift axis is enough. If it has to be moved, turned or joined in space, the manipulator is the right choice.
Can the systems be combined?
Yes. Lift axis and manipulator are frequently combined as a multi-axis system to unite vertical lifting and precise positioning in one system.
Is a lift column the same as a lift axis?
No. The terms are often confused, but a lift column usually serves simple height adjustment, while the lift axis is designed as an industrial heavy-load guide.
