Defense Ramp-Up: What the Manufacturing Boom Means for Suppliers and Handling Technology

The defense ramp-up has long reached not only the large system houses but the entire supply chain. Anyone manufacturing components, assemblies or parts for defense technology faces the same question: how can production be ramped up quickly and safely? For suppliers, handling technology is a central building block.

The defense ramp-up for suppliers hits the entire supply chain: anyone manufacturing components for defense technology must ramp up production quickly and safely.

What the defense ramp-up means for suppliers

Rising call-offs meet limited shop-floor space and scarce personnel. For suppliers this means: the existing employees must do more, without physical strain increasing or quality suffering. Handling technology decouples output from pure muscle power and makes workstations more broadly staffable.

This is especially relevant for medium-sized suppliers who cannot increase personnel at will. A lifting aid that takes over heavy components acts here like a capacity multiplier.

Handling ammunition, gun and vehicle components safely

Whether ammunition components, gun parts or heavy structural components for vehicles: much of it is heavy and sensitive. An articulated manipulator moves components up to 800 kg sway-free, the ZH90 lift axis lifts up to 1,200 kg. For cylindrical loads such as tubes or casings, a roll lifter is suitable.

Invest quickly without overstretching the risk

Suppliers must invest during the ramp-up without overreaching. Handling technology can be introduced in stages, from the single relieved workstation to the line. Whether an investment pays off is shown in the article What does a manipulator cost. Which form of procurement fits is covered in Rent or buy a manipulator.

What suppliers gain during the ramp-up:

  • More output with the existing personnel.

  • More broadly staffable workstations, independent of individual strength.

  • Fewer lost workdays through lower physical strain.

  • Stepwise expansion matching the order volume.

Confidentiality in the supply chain

In defense technology, strict confidentiality requirements often apply, including at suppliers. Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik works in accordance with TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection and is certified to ISO 9001. The industry context is explored in the article Handling technology for the defense industry.

Practical example: gun-tube handling at the supplier

A medium-sized supplier manufactures tube components for defense technology. The blanks weigh up to 600 kg and have to be moved several times between turning, drilling and inspection stations. Before the changeover, each repositioning tied up two employees and a crane, with corresponding waiting times.

A roll lifter with mandrel attachment now picks up the cylindrical component safely, and one worker moves it sway-free between the stations. This halves the handling time per tube and makes the workstation accessible to more employees, a direct lever during the ramp-up, without additional shop-floor space.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the defense ramp-up also affect suppliers?

  • Because the rising call-offs of the system houses are passed directly to the supply chain. Suppliers must also ramp up their production quickly and safely.

How does handling technology help medium-sized suppliers?

  • It increases output with the existing personnel, makes workstations more broadly staffable and lowers physical strain, without having to increase personnel at will.

Which components can be handled?

  • Ammunition, gun and vehicle components up to 1,200 kg, depending on the system sway-free with lift axis, articulated manipulator or roll lifter.

Are confidentiality requirements met?

  • Yes. Zeilhofer HHT works in accordance with TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection and treats sensitive data in the supply chain confidentially accordingly.
