The EU Machinery Regulation 2027 applies from 20 January 2027 directly in all EU member states. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 fully replaces the previous Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and tightens, among other things, the ergonomics requirements: in future, not only physical but also mental over-strain of operators must be reduced to a minimum.

What is the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230?

Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 is the new European legal framework for placing machinery on the market. As a regulation, it applies directly and uniformly, without national implementation. The cut-off date is 20 January 2027. There is no further transitional period for placing on the market under the old law. Anyone who builds, procures or substantially modifies machinery should plan for the requirements early.

New ergonomics obligations at a glance

A central point of the new regulation are the expanded ergonomics requirements. In intended use, discomfort, fatigue and physical as well as mental over-strain of operators must be reduced as far as possible. All human-machine interfaces are to be adapted to the foreseeable physical and mental characteristics of operators. Manual heavy-load activities are thus moving more strongly into the focus of design and workstation layout.

What does this mean for your production?

For plant management, industrial engineering and EHS this means: workstations where heavy loads are moved manually belong on the test bench. Wherever lifting, holding and positioning physically strain operators, technical solutions that reduce the strain are required. This aligns with the question of how many kg you may lift, and with the existing risk assessment.

Meet the requirements with handling technology

Handling technology is a direct lever to reduce manual strain. The manipulator (up to 800 kg) moves loads pendulum-free, the ZH90 lifting axis (up to 1,200 kg) lifts heavy components in a controlled manner on the Z-axis. Loads are positioned virtually weightlessly and precisely. What a manipulator achieves is explained in the Guide: What is a manipulator?.

Ergonomics and cost-effectiveness

Ergonomics is not only a duty, it is economical. Anyone who handles heavy loads technically reduces musculoskeletal disorders and days lost, lowers scrap and increases cycle reliability. Ergonomic handling technology therefore pays off twice: on compliance and on productivity.

Customized engineering from a single source

Every machine and every workstation is different. That is why Zeilhofer develops every solution individually: engineering, design, manufacturing, commissioning and service from a single source in Holzkirchen. The company is ISO 9001 certified and works according to TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection, with solutions for 18 industries and customers in over 50 countries.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

From when does the EU Machinery Regulation apply?

  • Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from 20 January 2027 directly in all EU member states. There is no further transitional period for placing on the market under the old law.

Which directive does the EU Machinery Regulation replace?

  • It fully replaces the previous Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and applies as a regulation directly, without national implementation.

What changes for ergonomics requirements?

  • In future, in addition to physical, mental over-strain of operators must also be minimised. Human-machine interfaces are to be adapted to the physical and mental characteristics of operators.

How does handling technology help with implementation?

  • Manipulators and lifting axes reduce manual lifting of heavy loads and therefore physical over-strain. This supports both compliance and productivity.
