How many kg may you lift? Limits and the Key Indicator Method

How many kg may you lift? In Germany there is no rigid kilogram limit. The decisive rule is the German Load Handling Regulation (LasthandhabV), which requires a risk assessment using the Key Indicator Method for manual lifting and carrying. As a rough orientation: from around 25 kg for men and 15 kg for women, the risk increases significantly. What matters in the end, however, are frequency, body posture and gripping conditions.

Is there a legal weight limit for lifting?

A fixed legal upper limit in kilograms does not exist in Germany. The LasthandhabV implements the EU Directive 90/269/EEC and obliges employers to avoid or minimise manual load handling. If lifting cannot be avoided, a risk assessment is mandatory. The permissible load therefore always depends on the specific workplace, not on a blanket value.

Key Indicator Method: how the risk is assessed

The Key Indicator Method (LMM) of the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is the recognised assessment procedure. It takes four key indicators into account: load weight, body posture, execution conditions, and frequency and duration of the activity. From these factors a risk score emerges, classified from low to high. A high score means measures are required, e.g. a technical lifting aid.

Reference values: what counts as a heavy load?

As a practical orientation, for occasional lifting around 15 kg for women and 25 kg for men are considered the threshold above which a closer assessment is required. With frequent lifting, unfavourable posture or limited gripping conditions, this value drops significantly. Anyone who lifts several times per minute or moves loads above shoulder height reaches the critical range even at lower weights. At the latest then, technical support pays off. Which aids support box lifting is explained in the Guide: lifting aids for cardboard boxes.

Ergonomics and cost-effectiveness

If the critical load is regularly exceeded, musculoskeletal disorders threaten — among the most common causes of days lost in production. Technical lifting aids measurably reduce physical strain, lower poor posture and at the same time increase cycle reliability and throughput. Ergonomic workstations are also an argument in the competition for skilled workers. More on this under ergonomic handling technology.

When the load gets too heavy: handling technology

When components exceed the limit of safe manual lifting, handling technology takes over. The manipulator (up to 800 kg) moves loads stationary and pendulum-free, the ZH90 lifting axis (up to 1,200 kg) lifts on the linear Z-axis. Mobile lifting platforms up to 100 kg relieve lighter, frequent activities. What a manipulator actually is and how it works is explained in the Guide: What is a manipulator?.

Customized engineering from a single source

Every workplace brings its own requirements. That is why every solution is created individually: engineering, design, manufacturing, commissioning and service from a single source in Holzkirchen. Zeilhofer Handling Technology is ISO 9001 certified and works according to TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. With solutions for 18 industries and customers in over 50 countries, we know the requirements of heavy and sensitive components. Related: EU Machinery Regulation 2027 and Ergonomics.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How many kg may you lift at the workplace?

A fixed legal limit does not exist in Germany. The decisive thing is a risk assessment according to the Key Indicator Method. As a guideline, around 25 kg for men and 15 kg for women are considered the critical threshold.

What is the Key Indicator Method?

The Key Indicator Method of the BAuA assesses the risk in manual lifting based on load weight, body posture, execution conditions and frequency and duration. From this a risk score emerges from low to high.

From which weight does a lifting aid make sense?

As soon as the Key Indicator Method indicates a high risk score, e.g. with frequent lifting or unfavourable posture. Often this is the case well below 25 kg.

Which loads can a Zeilhofer lifting aid move?

Mobile lifting platforms up to 100 kg, manipulators up to 800 kg and the ZH90 lifting axis up to 1,200 kg. Individual grippers make heavy loads pendulum-free and precisely manageable.
