  • Defense Industry Series Production: Why It Relies on Reproducible Manufacturing Lines

In the defense industry, the focus is shifting from single-unit and small-batch production toward reproducible series production. What begins as a prototype must go into volume without quality or occupational safety suffering. Handling technology is the key to managing the transition from prototype to series cleanly. In defense-industry series production, reproducibility is the decisive factor, because only then do quality and tolerances stay constant across rising unit numbers. Why the defense industry scales from prototype to series Prototypes are often created in manual single-unit production, in which experienced workers move a lot by hand. For series production this no longer works: unit numbers rise, cycle times must fall, and every step must be reproducible. It is precisely here that handling decides whether the series runs economically. Manipulators and lift axes bring repeat accuracy into the process. They always guide the component the same way, regardless of which employee staffs the workstation. This is the prerequisite for constant quality in series production. Reproducibility as a quality factor In defense technology, functional surfaces and tolerances are often critical. Sway-free handling protects the component from impacts and ensures that it is always fed in the same position. How a multi-axis module turns and positions components reproducibly is shown by the ZH3 arm. For pure vertical lifting of heavy components, the ZH90 lift axis up to 1,200 kg is suitable. Certified quality from prototype to series Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik is certified to ISO 9001 and TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. Every solution is engineered individually, from the first fixture to the series line. Typical steps on the way into series production: Design an individual fixture for the prototype component. Design the handling sway-free and reproducible. Design the workstation ergonomically so that it can be staffed broadly. As unit numbers rise, expand toward a semi-automated line. Individual fixtures for every geometry Defense components are rarely standard. Grippers and fixtures are therefore designed exactly for the respective geometry. How such custom construction is created is shown in the article Custom grippers and fixtures. Component weights, system selection and explosion protection are covered in the guide Handling technology for the defense industry. Frequently asked questions Why is reproducibility so important in defense series production? Because quality and tolerances must stay constant. Sway-free, always identical handling ensures that every component is fed in the same position and without damage. How does handling technology support the transition from prototype to series? It brings repeat accuracy and ergonomics into the process, so that rising unit numbers are managed with constant quality and more broadly staffable workstations. • Defense Ramp-Up: What the Manufacturing Boom Means for Suppliers and Handling Technology

The defense ramp-up has long reached not only the large system houses but the entire supply chain. Anyone manufacturing components, assemblies or parts for defense technology faces the same question: how can production be ramped up quickly and safely? For suppliers, handling technology is a central building block. Manufacturing in the defense industry What the defense ramp-up means for suppliers Rising call-offs meet limited shop-floor space and scarce personnel. For suppliers this means: the existing employees must do more, without physical strain increasing or quality suffering. Handling technology decouples output from pure muscle power and makes workstations more broadly staffable. This is especially relevant for medium-sized suppliers who cannot increase personnel at will. A lifting aid that takes over heavy components acts here like a capacity multiplier. Handling armor, structural and vehicle components safely Whether armor and structural components or components for protected and armored vehicles: much of it is heavy and sensitive. An articulated manipulator moves components up to 800 kg sway-free, the ZH90 lift axis lifts up to 1,200 kg. For cylindrical loads such as tubes, a roll lifter is suitable. Invest quickly without overstretching the risk Suppliers must invest during the ramp-up without overreaching. Handling technology can be introduced in stages, from the single relieved workstation to the line. Whether an investment pays off is shown in the article What does a manipulator cost. Which form of procurement fits, from purchase to leasing and hire purchase, is covered in our article on procurement options. What suppliers gain during the ramp-up: More output with the existing personnel. More broadly staffable workstations, independent of individual strength. Fewer lost workdays through lower physical strain. Stepwise expansion matching the order volume. Certified quality for suppliers Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik is certified to ISO 9001 and TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. Component weights, system selection and explosion protection are covered in the guide Handling technology for the defense industry. Frequently asked questions Why does the defense ramp-up also affect suppliers? Because the rising call-offs of the system houses are passed directly to the supply chain. Suppliers must also ramp up their production quickly and safely. How does handling technology help medium-sized suppliers? It increases output with the existing personnel, makes workstations more broadly staffable and lowers physical strain, without having to increase personnel at will. Which components can be handled? Armor and structural components and components for protected and armored vehicles up to 800 kg with an articulated manipulator and up to 1,200 kg with a lift axis, moved sway-free; a roll lifter is another option. Which certifications does Zeilhofer HHT hold? Zeilhofer HHT is certified to ISO 9001 and TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. Ready for the ramp-up? Are you a defense-technology supplier and want to ramp up your production? Our engineers are happy to advise you and design your solution individually, Made in Germany, from a single source. • Manipulator for the Plastics and Injection-Molding Industry

Large injection-molded parts, tools, molds and filled mesh boxes shape everyday work in plastics processing. Much of it is heavy, hot or sensitive. Anyone changing tools or removing components here needs a lifting aid that guides precisely and relieves the worker. This article shows where a manipulator in injection molding plays to its strengths. A manipulator for injection molding is therefore designed for three tasks: changing heavy tools, removing large molded parts and handling material safely. Injection-molded part for car production Manipulator in injection molding: typical handling tasks In plastics and injection-molding production, three task areas mainly arise: changing heavy injection-molding tools, removing and passing on large molded parts, and handling material containers and rolls. All three have in common that manual force quickly reaches its limits and precision is required. There is also the time factor: especially during tool changes, every minute of downtime counts. A sway-free lifting aid shortens the setup time and makes the change safely reproducible. Tool change at the injection-molding machine Injection-molding tools are compact but very heavy. A manipulator or a lift axis positions the tool sway-free and with millimeter precision in front of the machine, which shortens setup times and reduces the risk of injury. How a floating tool change works is shown in the article floating tool change at large machining centers. Removal and handling of large molded parts Large-volume injection-molded parts, such as bumpers, housings or containers, are bulky and partly surface-sensitive. An articulated manipulator with an adapted gripper or vacuum attachment removes them gently and guides them for further processing. How a manipulator for bumpers is designed is shown in the article Manipulator for car bumpers. For sensitive, smooth surfaces, the vacuum attachment is suitable, because it holds the load gently and over a large area without leaving pressure marks. Material, rolls and containers Raw material also has to be moved: film and material rolls, sacks or filled containers. For cylindrical loads, a roll lifter is suitable, for containers and drums the appropriate manipulator. An overview of all systems is given in the guide to lifting aids. Typical tasks in this area are: Lifting and emptying granulate containers and sacks ergonomically. Picking up and mounting film and material rolls sway-free. Moving and tilting filled mesh boxes with finished parts. Benefit for production and employees A manipulator in injection molding reduces physical strain, speeds up tool changes and protects sensitive component surfaces. This lowers lost workdays and increases productivity. Background is provided by the article Musculoskeletal disorders in production. Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik designs every solution individually, is certified to ISO 9001 and works in accordance with TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. Frequently asked questions How do you change heavy injection-molding tools safely? A manipulator or a lift axis guides the tool sway-free and with millimeter precision in front of the machine. This shortens the setup time and reduces the risk of injury during the tool change. How do you remove large injection-molded parts gently? With an articulated manipulator and an adapted gripper or vacuum attachment, large-volume molded parts are removed damage-free and guided onward precisely. Are the solutions also suitable for material rolls? Yes. For cylindrical loads such as film and material rolls, a roll lifter with a suitable attachment is suitable, for example mandrel, expanding mandrel or vacuum gripper. How heavy may the tools be? Depending on the system, loads up to 1,200 kg can be handled. The ZH90 lift axis lifts up to 1,200 kg, the manipulator up to 800 kg, each sway-free and precise. Your application in injection molding? Do you change tools or handle large molded parts in plastics production? Our engineers are happy to advise you and design your solution individually, Made in Germany, from a single source. • Manipulator for the Wood Industry: Handling Panels and Glulam Ergonomically

Solid wood panels, glulam beams, furniture carcasses or wood-based panels are bulky, heavy and pressure-sensitive at edges and surfaces. In the wood and furniture industry, the right lifting aid decides whether components are moved damage-free, ergonomically and in cycle. A manipulator for the wood industry solves exactly these tasks. A manipulator for the wood industry is therefore designed for two things: gentle handling of sensitive surfaces and safe movement of heavy solid wood and glulam components. ZH90 lift axis with vacuum device for wood panels Why a manipulator for the wood industry pays off Wood components bring special requirements: large surfaces combined with sensitive surfaces, high weights with solid wood and glulam, and changing formats in production. Manual lifting quickly leads to poor postures and to pressure marks or scratches on the workpiece. Sway-free, gentle load guidance is therefore decisive. It protects both employees from physical overload and the high-quality surfaces from damage, which directly reduces the reject rate. Suitable lifting aids for the wood industry Panel handling with vacuum For chipboard, MDF and solid wood panels, a manipulator with an area suction pad is suitable, picking up the load over a large area and gently, without exerting pressure on edges. How panel handling works in practice is shown in the article on the safe handling of wood panels. Heavy glulam and solid wood For heavy, long components, the ZH90 lift axis is suitable, lifting loads up to 1,200 kg sway-free and impact-free. Combined with an adapted fixture, even unwieldy geometries can be guided safely. Flexible assembly and changing workstations In furniture assembly, the mobile, battery-powered Hebelift ZH scores, usable at changing locations without a compressed-air connection. For movements in space, the articulated manipulator is suitable, turning, tilting and precisely positioning the component. Typical applications in wood processing Across the industry, similar tasks arise: Panel feeding and removal at sawing, CNC and edge-banding machines. Turning and rotating panels for two-sided processing. Feeding presses with heavy glulam panels. Order picking and stacking of finished furniture parts. How machine loading is generally solved ergonomically is shown in the article Ergonomic machine loading. Ergonomics and economy A manipulator for the wood industry reduces physical strain, lowers rejects through damage-free handling and increases cycle reliability. Which weights are even permissible manually is explained in the article How many kg may you lift. The economic benefit is shown in What does a manipulator cost. Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik supplies 18 industries with individually designed solutions, from the needs analysis through engineering to worldwide commissioning, all from a single source in Holzkirchen, Germany. Frequently asked questions How do you lift large wood panels damage-free? With a manipulator and area suction pad, the panel is picked up over a large area via vacuum. This distributes the holding force evenly and avoids pressure marks on edges and surface. Which lifting aid is suitable for heavy glulam beams? For heavy, long components the ZH90 lift axis is suitable, lifting up to 1,200 kg sway-free, complemented by a fixture adapted to the geometry. Are there mobile solutions for furniture assembly? Yes. The battery-powered Hebelift ZH works without compressed air and can be used flexibly at changing assembly locations. Can panels also be turned and rotated? Yes. An articulated manipulator with a suitable fixture turns and tilts panels, so that two-sided processing is possible without manual repositioning. Your application in wood processing? Do you handle wood panels, glulam beams or furniture parts and are looking for the right lifting aid? Our engineers are happy to advise you and design your solution individually, Made in Germany, from a single source. • ATEX and Ex Protection: Handling Technology for Areas at Risk of Explosion

In paint shops, the chemical industry, powder handling or battery manufacturing, explosive atmospheres can occur. Anyone lifting and moving loads there needs an ATEX manipulator that does not form an ignition source. This article explains what ATEX means, which zones exist and why the drive determines suitability or unsuitability. Articulated manipulator with gripping device for aluminum components What does ATEX mean? ATEX stands for the EU directives on explosion protection, derived from the French term ATmosphères EXplosibles. They regulate which equipment may be used in areas where flammable gases, vapors, mists or dusts can form an explosive atmosphere. For operators the rule is: in designated Ex areas, only tested and marked equipment may be used. This also applies to lifting aids and manipulators. A system that runs without problems in a normal production area is not automatically approved for use in an Ex area. The requirements must be incorporated into the design from the outset. Ex zones: where is which protection needed? Areas at risk of explosion are divided into zones, depending on how frequently and how long a hazardous atmosphere occurs: Zones 0, 1, 2: for gases, vapors and mists, from permanently present (0) to rare and short-term (2). Zones 20, 21, 22: for combustible dusts, analogously from permanent (20) to rare (22). The lower the number, the more frequently an explosive atmosphere is to be expected and the stricter the requirements for the equipment used. Which zone applies is determined by the operator in the explosion protection document. From this it follows which equipment category a lifting aid must meet. ATEX manipulator: why the drive determines suitability The decisive factor in the Ex area is avoiding ignition sources such as sparks, hot surfaces or electrostatic discharge. Here the drive plays the main role. A pneumatically operated ATEX manipulator works without electrical drive energy at the load and is therefore fundamentally well suited for use in areas at risk of explosion, provided all components are designed and grounded accordingly. Which strengths pneumatic and electric drives each have is explained in the guide Pneumatic or electric drive. Fundamentals on the systems are provided by the guide to lifting aids. What always matters is the overall view: grippers, sensors and grounding must also fit the Ex protection concept. Typical industries with Ex requirements Explosion protection is relevant in, among others, painting and coating technology, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, the handling of powdered substances, and increasingly in battery and cell manufacturing. How handling technology works in sensitive environments is shown in the articles on cleanroom and pharma and on battery module handling. In battery manufacturing in particular, the topic is gaining importance, because both solvent vapors and reactive materials can occur there. Sway-free, process-reliable handling is doubly important here. What operators should pay attention to It is crucial to include the Ex requirements in the design early: zone, material properties and required equipment category belong in the first needs analysis. This way the lifting aid is designed appropriately from the start, instead of being retrofitted at great expense later. Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik engineers every solution individually, is certified to ISO 9001 and works in accordance with TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. Frequently asked questions Are pneumatic manipulators suitable for Ex areas? Pneumatic manipulators work without electrical drive energy at the load and are therefore fundamentally well suited for areas at risk of explosion, provided all components are designed and grounded accordingly. What is an Ex zone? An Ex zone classifies an area according to how frequently an explosive atmosphere occurs. From this it is derived which equipment may be used there. Who defines the Ex zone? The operator defines the zones as part of their explosion protection document. The design of the handling technology is based on this. In which industries is ATEX relevant? Above all in painting and coating technology, in chemicals and pharmaceuticals, in powder handling, and increasingly in battery and cell manufacturing. Planning handling in an Ex area? Do you need an ATEX manipulator for an area at risk of explosion? Our engineers incorporate the Ex requirements from the outset and design your solution individually, Made in Germany, from a single source. • Retrofitting a Manipulator: When Retrofit Beats a New Purchase

An existing lifting aid or an aging manipulator does not have to be replaced just because the task has changed. Often the existing system can be retrofitted: a new gripper, new controls, more load capacity or an additional degree of freedom. This article shows when a retrofit pays off, what is technically possible and what to watch for regarding safety and inspection. Retrofit on a ZH90 lift axis What does retrofit mean in handling technology? Retrofit means modernizing an existing system instead of procuring a completely new one. With manipulators, lift axes and lifting aids this typically concerns three levels: the mechanics (arm, bearings, guide), the load attachment (gripper, fixture) and the controls (valves, joystick, sensors). Each level can be renewed individually or in combination. The advantage is obvious: the load-bearing base structure, foundation and installation remain in place. This saves time, cost and downtime compared to a new system and can often be implemented within a few days. Retrofitting a manipulator: when it pays off A retrofit is usually more economical than a new purchase in these cases: Changed component geometry: a new gripper or an adapted fixture is often enough to handle different parts. How custom solutions are created is shown in the article Custom grippers and fixtures. Higher cycle rate or precision: modernized controls with a sensitive joystick improve ergonomics and cycle reliability. More load capacity: within limits, capacity can be increased by adapting the drive and load attachment. Aging: wear parts, seals and valves are renewed, and the system runs process-reliably again. An example of the longevity of well-maintained systems is shown in the article 20 years in continuous operation. Such systems in particular are ideal candidates for retrofitting a manipulator instead of replacing it. Mechanics, gripper or controls: what can be renewed? Load attachment and gripper The gripper is the most frequently retrofitted component. Whether clamping, form-fit, magnetic or vacuum gripper: the attachment is designed for the new geometry and swapped via a quick-change coupling. This way a manipulator handles several component variants without touching the base system. Controls and operation Electro-pneumatic controls, programmable displays and ergonomic control handles can be retrofitted. This increases precision and noticeably reduces the operating force. Fundamentals on the drive and the choice between pneumatic and electric are explained in the guide Pneumatic or electric drive. Mechanics and load structure Bearings, guides and joints are overhauled, and the working radius is adjusted if needed. With the ZH90 lift axis, for example, the load attachment can be converted for new applications. An articulated manipulator can also be mechanically extended, for instance by an additional degree of freedom. Safety and inspection after the conversion Important: any substantial change to a lifting aid may require a renewed risk assessment and inspection. After a retrofit, the system is inspected again according to the applicable regulations before it goes into operation. A practical example of recurring inspection is shown in the article Recurring safety inspection in customer operation. Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik is certified to ISO 9001 and works in accordance with TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. Retrofit or new system: the decision As a rule of thumb: if the base structure stays intact and mainly the task changes, a retrofit is usually the more economical choice. If the mechanics are at the end of their service life or requirements increase significantly, a new system is worthwhile. A sound selection is described in the article Choosing lifting technology correctly. Whether an investment pays off is shown in What does a manipulator cost. In many companies, a retrofit is also a sustainability topic: continuing to use an existing, solid steel structure saves material and resources compared to a complete rebuild. Frequently asked questions Can I convert an old manipulator to new components? In most cases yes. A new gripper or an adapted fixture is often enough to handle different geometries without replacing the base system. Does the system have to be re-inspected after a retrofit? In the case of substantial changes, yes. The system is inspected according to the applicable safety regulations before being put back into operation. Is a retrofit worthwhile compared to a new system? If the load-bearing structure is retained and mainly the task changes, a retrofit is usually cheaper and faster to implement than a complete new purchase. How long does a retrofit take? That depends on the scope. A pure gripper change is often done within a few days, while a comprehensive modernization of controls and mechanics takes correspondingly longer. Modernizing your system? Would you like to retrofit a manipulator or check whether a retrofit is worthwhile? Our engineers are happy to advise you and design the solution individually, Made in Germany, from a single source. • Rent or Buy a Manipulator: What Pays Off for Your Application

A lifting aid is an investment that pays off over years. Even so, the question often arises at the start of whether to rent or buy a manipulator. The answer depends less on price alone than on duration of use, utilization and how individual the solution has to be. This article classifies the options objectively. Special floor trolley with ZH90 lift axis including gripper Rent or buy a manipulator: why the task decides Industrial manipulators and lift axes are in most cases custom-engineered: adapted to component, gripper, workstation and process. A system designed in this way is geared toward many years of continuous operation. This distinguishes handling technology from standardized devices that can be rented at short notice. The basic question is therefore not first rent or buy, but: do you need a permanent, exactly fitting solution or a short-term bridge for a generic task? From this, the economically correct form of procurement almost always follows. Buying: the rule for custom solutions For an individually engineered lifting aid, buying is usually the most economical form. The system belongs to the company, is usable over many years and amortizes through reduced lost workdays, higher cycle reliability and lower personnel effort. How this amortization adds up is shown in the article What does a manipulator cost. A practical example of longevity is provided by 20 years in continuous operation. From an operational point of view, the following points especially speak for it: Exact fit: gripper, fixture and controls are precisely designed for the component. Long service life: a robust system runs many years in continuous operation. Full availability: the lifting aid is ready at the workstation at any time, without return deadlines. Balance-sheet value: the system is a depreciable asset in the company's fixed assets. Leasing and financing Anyone who wants to spread the investment over the term can examine leasing via our financing partner Würth Leasing (terms of 24, 36 or 48 months) or hire purchase (12, 24, 36 or 48 months). This protects liquidity but does not change the fact that the system remains permanently in the company. Such models are particularly suitable when the lifting aid is firmly planned but the budget is to be stretched. Leasing is therefore not an alternative to buying in the actual sense, but a form of financing for a permanently used system. Whether buying or leasing is cheaper depends on tax, term and liquidity situation and is best coordinated with the tax advisor. When renting can make sense Zeilhofer does not offer rental systems. Renting from a rental provider comes into consideration above all for time-limited, generic tasks, such as a special batch, a short production ramp-up or bridging a system failure. As soon as the task is permanent or requires a component-specific fixture, the advantages of your own, exactly fitting system prevail. A generic rental solution can rarely map component-specific handling as precisely as an engineered system. How the right selection succeeds and what matters is described in the article Choosing lifting technology correctly. Total cost of ownership instead of purchase price What is decisive is not the purchase price alone, but the total costs over the service life: operation, maintenance, downtimes and ergonomic gain. Your own, long-lasting system usually performs better here than permanent rental, because it is spread over years and, after amortization, only causes low operating costs. There is also the ergonomic benefit: fewer poor postures mean fewer lost workdays. What manual lifting actually costs is shown in the article Musculoskeletal disorders in production. Which mistakes should be avoided when selecting is shown in 3 mistakes when selecting handling technology. Zeilhofer Handhabungstechnik designs every solution individually, from the needs analysis through engineering and manufacturing in Holzkirchen to worldwide commissioning. The company is certified to ISO 9001 and works in accordance with TISAX Level 2 with prototype protection. Frequently asked questions Can you rent a manipulator? For short-term, generic tasks, renting from a rental provider can make sense. Zeilhofer does not offer rental systems: since industrial manipulators are mostly custom-engineered, buying, leasing or hire purchase is the rule for permanent tasks. Is leasing worthwhile for a lifting aid? Leasing or financing can protect liquidity when the system is firmly planned. The lifting aid remains permanently in the company, so leasing does not replace the purchase but finances it. What is cheaper, renting or buying? Viewed over the service life, buying an exactly fitting system is usually cheaper than permanent rental, because it amortizes through reduced lost workdays and higher productivity. How long does an industrial manipulator last? With regular maintenance and safety inspection, many years of continuous operation are common. Practical examples show systems that still run reliably after 20 years. Which form of procurement suits you? Are you considering whether to rent or buy a manipulator? Our engineers are happy to advise you and design your solution individually, Made in Germany, from a single source. • Lift Column, Lift Axis or Manipulator: What Is the Difference?

In everyday use, the lift column is often confused with the lift axis and the manipulator, yet it solves a task all of its own. This article explains what a lift column is, where its limits lie and how it differs from the lift axis and the manipulator. This way you choose the right system and avoid wrong investments. A brief classification up front: a lift column adjusts the height, the lift axis raises heavy loads sway-free on the vertical axis, and the manipulator handles the component freely in space. The difference between lift column, lift axis and manipulator therefore mainly comes down to task, weight and type of movement. Articulated manipulator with vacuum device What is a lift column? A lift column is a telescoping linear drive that raises a load purely vertically, usually over comparatively short travels. It is the right choice when only a height needs to be changed, such as the working height of a table. It does not provide sway-free load guidance in space or any turning and tilting of the load. Where a lift column is used Typical applications of a lift column are height-adjustable workbenches, assembly and packing stations, machine frames or camera systems. Wherever a single level needs to be adjusted cleanly and repeatably in height, the lift column is the simple, compact solution. The lift column reaches its limit as soon as the load becomes heavy or has to be moved, guided or joined in space. That is where the lift axis or the manipulator come into play. Lift axis: sway-free heavy loads on the Z-axis The lift axis is a linear load guide that raises heavy loads purely vertically and sway-free, with the ZH90 lift axis up to 1,200 kg. Unlike the simple lift column, it is designed for industrial continuous operation, high load capacity and process reliability, and it can be integrated into complex systems, for example with synchronized axes. The lift axis plays to its strengths wherever heavy components are moved precisely and without impact on the vertical axis, without the load being allowed to sway sideways. When a lift axis and when a manipulator is the right Z-axis solution is explored in the article Lift axis or manipulator. Distinction from the manipulator A manipulator does not just lift, it positions, turns, tilts and joins the component with millimeter precision, including off-center loads. This covers tasks a lift column cannot perform. A detailed definition is provided in the guide: What is a manipulator. At Zeilhofer the range extends from the articulated manipulator for movements in space to the cable manipulator for light, fast loads. The deeper distinction between lift axis and manipulator is covered in the article Lift axis or manipulator. Direct comparison: which solution when? Pure height adjustment over short travel, low to medium load: lift column. Heavy load purely vertical, sway-free, industrial continuous operation: lift axis. Move, turn, join, position the load in space: manipulator. In practice the systems are often combined: a lift axis for vertical lifting, a manipulator for positioning, complemented by the right gripper. Such multi-axis systems combine the strengths of several systems in one solution. A complete overview of all lifting aids is given in the guide to lifting aids. What matters when choosing Three questions usually lead to the right solution: how heavy is the load? Does it only need to be lifted or also guided in space? And how often does the task repeat? Clarifying these points early avoids over- or under-dimensioning. Which mistakes frequently happen here is shown in the article 3 mistakes when selecting handling technology. Frequently asked questions What is the difference between a lift column and a lift axis? A lift column adjusts the height over short travel, usually for lighter loads. A lift axis is designed for heavy loads up to 1,200 kg, sway-free lifting and industrial continuous operation. Do I need a lift axis or a manipulator? If the load only needs to be lifted vertically, the lift axis is enough. If it has to be moved, turned or joined in space, the manipulator is the right choice. Can the systems be combined? Yes. Lift axis and manipulator are frequently combined as a multi-axis system to unite vertical lifting and precise positioning in one system. Is a lift column the same as a lift axis? No. The terms are often confused, but a lift column usually serves simple height adjustment, while the lift axis is designed as an industrial heavy-load guide. Which solution suits your task? Are you unsure which solution suits your handling task? Our engineers are happy to advise you and design your system individually, Made in Germany, from a single source. • Handling Technology Glossary: Key Terms from A to Z

This handling-technology glossary from Zeilhofer explains the key terms around handling technology, manipulators and lifting aids: concise, vendor-neutral and to the point. From balancer and key indicator method to vacuum lifter. Articulated-arm manipulator Systems and designs Manipulator A manipulator is a guided handling device that takes the weight of a load so the operator can move it with little effort, pendulum-free and precisely. Unlike a crane, it carries the load via a rigid, articulated mechanism. Industrial manipulator A manipulator for continuous industrial use, designed for load capacity, cycle time and process reliability, up to 800 kg depending on the design. Articulated-arm / knuckle-boom manipulator A manipulator with an articulated arm that positions loads freely in space. Robust and precise for joining heavy parts. See articulated-jib manipulator. Parallelogram manipulator A design whose parallelogram mechanism keeps the load level during every movement, ideal for tilt-safe handling. See what is a parallelogram manipulator. Rope manipulator A lightweight manipulator that guides the load sensitively via ropes, fast and flexible for lighter loads. Lifting axis (lift axis) A linear load guide with an aluminium profile that lifts heavy loads purely vertically and pendulum-free, up to 1,200 kg. See the ZH90 lifting axis. Balancer / rope balancer A lifting device that holds the load almost weightlessly via a wire rope so it can be guided by hand. See what is a rope balancer. Mobile lifter A mobile, often battery-powered lifting aid that works without compressed air and can be used at changing workstations. Pillar jib crane A crane system with a rotating jib on a column; it serves as a carrier structure but does not provide pendulum-free load guidance like a manipulator. Chain hoist A hoist for purely vertical lifting; compared with a manipulator it lacks precise guidance and positioning. See the manipulator vs crane comparison. Load handling and gripping Gripper / load-handling attachment The component that grips the load mechanically, for example clamping, form-fit or magnetic grippers, designed individually for the geometry. Vacuum lifter / suction lifter A lifting device that picks up loads via negative pressure, gentle on smooth and sensitive surfaces. See what is a suction device. Suction device / vacuum gripper The load-side attachment of a vacuum system that adheres to the part by vacuum and sits on a manipulator or lifting axis. Area suction cup A large suction plate that distributes the holding force evenly, for panels, sheet metal and glass. Vacuum tube lifter A vacuum lifter with a lifting tube in which lifting and holding are controlled via the same airflow. Function and technology Pendulum-free handling Load guidance without after-swing: the operator positions the part to the centimetre without counter-steering. Load capacity The maximum load a system safely picks up; at Zeilhofer from 70 to 1,200 kg depending on the system. Working radius The horizontal action range of a manipulator around its pivot point. Drive: pneumatic or electric Manipulators run pneumatically, electro-pneumatically or fully electrically. Each variant has its own strengths. Ergonomics and occupational safety Lifting aid An umbrella term for technical systems that replace or relieve manual lifting, from the manipulator to the vacuum lifter. See manipulator as a lifting aid. Manual handling limits Legal requirements (in Germany the Load Handling Ordinance) oblige employers to avoid or reduce hazardous manual handling. Key indicator method (KIM/LMM) A method by the German Federal Institute (BAuA) for assessing physical strain during manual handling. See how many kg may you lift. UVV inspection / DGUV Regulation 54 A mandatory annual safety inspection for lifting aids and crane systems. See the annual safety inspection. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) The most common work-related illnesses; a central reason for using ergonomic lifting aids. Practical examples How do these terms work together in practice? Three typical examples from everyday Zeilhofer work: Glass handling: An articulated-arm manipulator with a vacuum area cup picks up a 120 kg glass pane pendulum-free and guides it to the façade with millimetre precision, without mechanical pressure on the sensitive surface. Heavy loads in the foundry: A ZH90 lifting axis raises a 900 kg mould box purely vertically and shock-free while the operator positions it precisely at the control handle. Mobile assembly: A battery-powered Mobile Lift ZH brings parts up to 100 kg to changing workstations without a compressed-air connection, ideal in order picking. Frequently asked questions What is the difference between a manipulator and a crane? A crane lifts a load freely swinging and vertically. A manipulator guides it pendulum-free via a rigid, articulated mechanism and positions it precisely, including turning, tilting and joining. See the comparison Manipulator vs crane. Which lifting aid suits which load? For vertical heavy loads up to 1,200 kg the lifting axis, for movements in space the articulated-arm manipulator, for light, fast loads the cable manipulator, and for compressed-air-free mobile use the mobile lift. Overview in the lifting aids guide. How much does a manipulator cost? Depending on capacity, drive and gripper, from about €10,000 for a simple rope manipulator to about €150,000 for a complex lifting axis solution. Details in What does a manipulator cost? From what weight is a lifting aid advisable? As soon as the key indicator method shows a high risk: as a guide from about 25 kg (men) or 15 kg (women), or at high lifting frequency. More in How many kg may you lift? Pneumatic or electric: which is better? There is no universal winner: without compressed air or for mobile, hygienic applications electric has the edge; for sensitive balancing with compressed air, pneumatic is often better.
